Ingredient Assembly for Garlic Breadsticks

Here’s what you will need:

  • beer (I recommend an ale or lager), room temperature or cold
  • milk, room temperature or cold
  • yeast (instant yeast will let you skip the proof time, but active dry yeast will also work)
  • sugar
  • all purpose flour
  • salt
  • butter or extra virgin olive oil
  • garlic powder (optional but highly recommended)
  • dried herbs (Italian seasoning or oregano or basil), optional

Pin it now to save it for later!

Tips for Prepping the dough

First off, we are going to mix our beer and milk in a large bowl then add our sugar and yeast and mix. Don’t worry about warming the beer or milk. This dough doesn’t require that they are warmed. If you are using instant yeast, you can continue on and add the flour and salt. If you are using active dry yeast, you will need to proof the yeast in the beer, milk, and sugar for around 10 minutes prior to proceeding.

Once you add the flour and salt, you will begin to knead the dough. Add the flour a little at a time, so that you can be sure you don’t add too much flour. You will need between 2 1/2 and 3 cups. We want the dough to be soft, slightly tacky, and only just barely stick to your hands. Definitely keep it a bit on the moist side. (We will also be rolling them out later and will need more flour then.) The dough ball should look similar to this:

Now, cover your dough and let it set for 10 minutes. Then prepare a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 16 pieces and roll them into tubes that are around 4 inches long and shaped like hot dogs.

Continue shaping the dough and then place them on a well greased cookie sheet, cover them, and let them set 20 minutes while you let the oven preheat.

Next up, these bake quickly. We are only baking these for 6 minutes. Then we brush on melted butter or extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with our garlic powder and/or herbs if using.

These go back in the oven (which is now turned OFF) for just 2 minutes.

Remove from oven and DIG IN!!!
